“the light in me salutes the light in you.”
Karen Prior, RYT is the creator of the Mamaste Yoga™ Program. Karen combines a background in hatha yoga with her deep understanding of pregnancy and birth. She has worked with pregnant women since 1995, first as a prenatal yoga teacher then as a doula and most recently as a childbirth educator. Karen is a registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance at the 500-hour level and currently runs Samatva Yoga, a state licensed vocational school that offers specialty courses for prenatal and postnatal yoga teachers under the brand, Mamaste Yoga. Karen has personally trained over 90 prenatal yoga teachers since the birth of Mamaste Yoga.
The focus in a prenatal yoga class changes from a traditional yoga class. In prenatal yoga the focus is to prepare the body and mind for labor, birth and motherhood. The preparation for these events includes releasing tension, maintaining good posture, learning to relax on command, keeping a positive outlook and clearing the mind of the stresses of pregnancy. Mamaste prenatal classes teaches body awareness exercises, breathing techniques and transverse abdominal strengthening exercises, supported balancing postures, standing poses, seated and lateral poses, focus and relaxation. Women are also taught to connect with their babies through meditation and through touch (hugging the baby with each exhale).
Mamaste Yoga postnatal classes are for mothers and their new babies. These classes concentrate on rebuilding the strength and flexibility in the muscles after birth, and help new mothers relax from the stress they may feel as new mothers.
Mamaste Yoga also now offers a Yoga for Women class for previous students who are not pregnant.
